An American Childhood Essay
In Annie Dillardââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"An American Childhoodâ⬠she takes us the reader back in time. She tells of the activities and games she played as a child, which also draws the reader in to her story more bringing back the same memories from their childhood. She sets the stage around Christmas time on a weekday in late December. Her and her friends were standing in knee deep snow along the road waiting for cars to pass by, an easy target for anyone who could throw a snowball. It was clearly a great day for hitting cars with all the traffic they encountered on Reynolds Street. After some time had passed Annie and her friends decided an ice ball was the way to go. So without further due they spread out and waited for the next victim. Sure enough a black Buick came close and they opened fire. As soon as one snowball struck the windshield something that had never happened before began. The man pulled over and the chase was on. After winding all over town on the chase the man finally caught them. Out of breath the man in a stern voice shouted ââ¬Å"You stupid kidsâ⬠. For Annie and her friends the thrill of the chase was a glory they wanted to last forever. It was surely a winter none of them will forget. Dillardââ¬â¢s main goal in this story was to show how great her childhood really was. It depicts how most people would describe a traditional American childhood. The great thing about this piece was the descriptiveness of it. Details describing the other characters along with the setting, and elements such as the weather really paint a great picture of the scene of the events on Reynolds Street. Also the verbs Dillard uses to describe the chase and the event in the mans pursuit shows us how terrifying it would have been as a child running from a grown man. Overall it was a great story that could easily relate to any young American child which made reading this piece very simple.

Persuassive speech School Uniforms Essay
Should school uniforms be required in public schools? It will increase education, and decrease on violence and the cost will be lowered. This is a question that has created debates in several different schools. Some say that school uniforms represent discipline and obedience while others say not wearing uniforms takes away from the childrenââ¬â¢s creativity and individuality. Not only does wearing uniforms teach obedience and discipline it also helps students to focus and have better grades and it cuts cost on parents. Will wearing uniforms improve education in schools? Yes wearing uniforms does improve on education. By having students wear uniforms they are more focused on their studies than what someone else has on. It has caused a less distraction because when you have students that are wearing all the new name brand clothing students are found in the classroom admiring the other peers clothes and shoes instead of focusing in the class room. So by wearing the uniforms they all have on the same thing and allow the students to focus and pay more attention in class which helps these students get better grades. When it comes to education, clothes are not quite important. According to (Thomas, S) ââ¬Å"studies show wearing uniforms help the educational environment. It only shows unity within the student-body but as well helps students concentrate in class.â⬠Do uniforms cut down on conflict in schools? I believe uniforms do cut down on conflict in schools. It cuts down on the competition with others in schools. Less fighting and more discipline. For instance High school and middle school students have it the worse it could be stressful trying to get all the credits you need to graduate. This is the age were they experience name brand clothing, shoes, also were the most bulling and violence comes in from gangââ¬â¢s and other different things. Being bullied by your appearance can be a bit overbearing. During my research I found that in the late 90ââ¬â¢s(Pickles, L, P.) the focus of uniforms was called to action for intercity schools were violence was happing in for several differen t reasons from theft to gangs and cliques. I remember when I was in middle school and high school before uniforms were implemented there was a big issue with gangs if you wore the wrong colorà (red or Blue) you were approached by these members. So going to uniforms were they all having the same color top and bottoms solved a lot of that violence. Then there comes the bulling and teasing of other students who are less fortunate than others. Students can be mean and messes with another studentââ¬â¢s self-confidence because they are in a household were they have to wear hand me downs or parents canââ¬â¢t afford the latest brands of clothing. So by wearing uniform everyone looks alike and there is no reason for the bullying. Do uniforms cut down cost? Uniforms indeed cut down cost for families. Instead of parents having to go out and buy $50.00 pair of jeans and yes that is for one pair. Most stores have bundle sales on school uniforms. What you paid for one pair of jeans can buy you 2 uniform bottoms and 2 uniform tops a nd some places 3 or 4. Only expensive thing you worry about is shoes. Uniforms are much less expensive than traditional clothing worn by teens. Some schools provide programs where kids can receive the uniforms at little or no cost. I remember my daughter went on a filed a trip when she got home from the field trip she had a be brown paper bag in the bag was 2 uniform pants 2 shirts, a sweater, socks, a pack of underwear and many more things that were given to her in this program that was offered in her school. So there is help to get uniforms at little to no cost were you canââ¬â¢t get that help with regular clothing for school. By allowing school uniforms in the school, education will improve studentââ¬â¢s success. It will enforce discipline towards learning. There will be less violence, Peer Pressure will reduce because there will be less distraction on what everyone else has on. However some people feel that wearing the uniforms takes away from a studentââ¬â¢s individuality students are still encouraged to be creative. Students tend to alter their uniform with jewelry. But we have to remember the most important thing school is a place for our children to learn not to flaunt wealth and fashion. We have to decide as a society if individual expression is more important than an improved violent free educational performance. Iââ¬â¢m like most parents uniforms can be worn during school and they can express there individuality outside the class room when it comes to dressing. References 1. Neck Rings and Lotus Feet
Bodily mutilation to achieve the goal of ultimate beauty for women resides within every culture in the world. An average American way of bodily mutilation to gain beauty is through plastic surgery. As for Africa, women believe having a long neck symbolizes their beauty and status within their village. In some parts of China, the women believe the smaller your feet are the more desirable you become. Within the Mae Hong Son area of northwest Thailand, the women of the tribes are more commonly known as the, ââ¬Å"Long-Necks. The women in these areas are known for adorning brass rings around their necks, The rings on the neck reach from the clavicle up to beneath the chin, and these rings are held very tightly by the bone structure from clavicle to chin. This neck ring adornment is started when the girls are five or six years old and the neck grows longer as additional rings are added with each passing year. It is from this practice that this tribe has gained the name of ââ¬Å"Long-Nec ksâ⬠. Some women wear thirty-seven brass rings around the neck and this is considered ideal. Not only do they wear the rings around their necks they will wear them around the arms and the legs, and for this tribe the rings are the most prominent sign of female beauty and status. ââ¬Å"Lotus Feetâ⬠is an ancient Chinese bodily mutilation of binding the feet to make the size much smaller. to the restructure the feet by the breaking of the arch and four smaller toes on each foot. After the initial binding procedure, usually around the age of seven, the feet would remain tightly bound with long cloth strips until the feet were no longer growing. The ideal foot consisted of three features, which was the length of three inches, a cleft between the heel and the sole, which was wanted to be around two to three inched deep, and that the feet appeared to be an extension of the leg, instead of platforms for the legs. Binding of the feet symbolized a lily or lotus flower because of the similarities in looks, if the womanââ¬â¢s feet were bound, they would be comparable to the grace and delicateness of the flower. If a woman had a natural size foot similar to a mans, it meant she was the opposite of grace and beauty such as a man would be characterized. Neck rings and feet binding pose serious negative effects to a human body. Neck rings caused a woman who adorned them to never be able to look up or down. The mobility of the neck was restricted where they wouldnââ¬â¢t even be able to drink from a cup without using a straw. Stretching of the neck pulled the muscles rendering them useless, to the point were if they were removed, the woman would not be able to hold her own head up.Feet binding can cause the woman to be nearly crippled, they have trouble getting out of chairs, doing activties on their feet, and have hip and spinal injuries throughout life. Although Neck-rings and Lotus feet are very different practices of bodily mutilation, they create the same de sired effect. These practices are to convey a womans beauty through a painful act, creating a falsified version of what society believed to be beautiful. Every culture shares this common theme throughout history, although it may be painful and odd, it continues on through our culture today.

Malcolm X's realization of self identity Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Malcolm X's realization of self identity - Essay Example I understand Malcolm considered him as a black person right from his childhood. His imposing struggle to become a spokesman was always discouraged by the societal benefit enjoyed by the white community. You know, it is an example of the present dayââ¬â¢s America. As you know well, when diplomacy fails, there is war; that is what happened to this man. Continuous rehearsal of humiliating events took him to the verge of reacting violently. And you know, as a result of this incident, he turned a rebel and started exhibiting a deviant behavior against anything he disliked. As an argument line I believe that his life resembled a Russian roulette game. Expectation of a good turn out from any endeavor is the right of every individual. He evaluated the priorities of the society and found that he must be white or of a fighting nature to stand against the inequalities in the society. I mean, Malcolm was transforming himself to be a governor of the consolidated feelings of the depressed black minds. I would like to give emphasize to the fact that Malcolm strongly opposed the whiteââ¬â¢s control of education and occupation. With his struggles for upholding the prestige and rights of the black, he took chances of risking his life. He never feared the impact of failure; success or failure seemed same to him. His objective of the fight was as solid as his thoughts. I think, he encouraged the indigenous equality claims of the black, because, the topography of American soil had become a stage for the white actors to demonstrate the cruel ways of discriminating the black. Let me consider Malcolmââ¬â¢s life in the prison for that longer term as a reformative time for him. He confronted questions about his color of his kin and hair. A white in the jail was a jinx across his life path. He had to apply himself, to the toxic conditions that people created with the uncontrolled use of chemicals to dye hair. Looking like a white was much more essential to survive on the

Presently, Myanmar is facing various kinds of social and economic tensions, which have hampered the national unity of the country. This has led to a major downfall in the economic development and decrease in various economic opportunities. 90 percent of the population follows Buddhism and the cultural and social values are based on Theravada Buddhism. Gender biasedness is also prevalent to a large extent in the Myanmar society (BEWG, 2011). The country has been facing severe challenges because initially, it was under the control of the military regime, which has compelled the people to adapt to a particular lifestyle. Firstly, the management of CIC should understand and analyze the cultural variations in Myanmar which will help the company in studying the attitude and behavior of the common people. Modeling techniques like Delphi methods will he lp in assessing the market requirement and developing strategies accordingly. Writing a reflection based on persona poster i created Essay
Writing a reflection based on persona poster i created - Essay Example The use of social technologies however is not only limited in social media such as Facebook and Twitter. We also used it in doing business, doing transaction and research although we may not realize it that we were already using it before the class. For example, when we buy some goods online where there is a camera for us to check it, it is already a use of social media. Checking online for an internship or summer job is already the use of social technology. Of course the class taught concepts about user research. They are however too generalized and I cannot relate to all of them. There are some concepts that are alien to me such as explanation of the hardware used in social technology and there are others that I could very much relate to it such as the application of social technology in social media. But of course, who would not be able to relate to social media with people of my age when almost all of us are engrossed with it. So my understanding of user research is basically personal empowerment. User research provides me with most of the information to become functional and productive as well as to be nonproductive. I mentioned that user research provide me with the most information to become functional because it enables me to do the things that I need to do. For example, user research provides me information needed to complete school works right at the comfort of my home. I can access the library or other books online. I can eve n do transactions online without having to leave my home. This is consistent with my statement when I said that user research makes me productive. I can pay my bills, inquire information about the things that I need to know and even enroll myself in school online which would have taken a lot of time and effort without the facility of user research. Research could also serve as a distraction when I have to surf the net with useless things when I need to finish something such as checking my Facebook

Supreme Court Justices (Government 2) Research Paper
Supreme Court Justices (Government 2) - Research Paper Example Both men are on the conservative wing of the court and have held their position there for many years. Both are remarkably intelligent men who have also been lightning rods for political controversy. Antonin Scalia is a Reagan appointee and has sat on the Court since 1986 and is the senior associate judge. He still has many years of service left. He is known for his sarcastic wit and sharp tongue, as well as for his hard-headedness. He is known for his dissenting opinions. A dissenting opinion disagrees with the majority opinion and is issued separately, often attacking the reasoning of the judges who sided with the majority. As one critic observes: His writing style is best described as equal parts anger, confidence, and pageantry. Scalia has a taste for garish analogies and offbeat allusionsââ¬âoften very funny onesââ¬âand he speaks in no uncertain terms. He is highly accessible and tries not to get bogged down in abstruse legal jargon. But most of all, Scalia's opinions rea d like they're about to catch fire for pure outrage. He does not, in short, write like a happy man (Clarke). Nevertheless, Scalia knows what he believes. In the end, he is not interested in the government forcing people to act in certain ways. Although he is a pro-life Catholic, in 1992 in a case about funding for Planned Parenthood, Scalia has this to say about the legality of abortion: ââ¬Å"The States may, if they wish, permit abortion on demand, but the Constitution does not require them to do so. The permissibility of abortion, and the limitations upon it, are to be resolved like most important questions in our democracy: by citizens trying to persuade one another and then voting.â⬠Another famous ruling by Scalia came in Grutter v. Bollinger in 2003. This was a case about affirmative action. The court ruled that the University of Michigan should permit affirmative action in order to create a more diverse, harmonious school. Scalia, in a dissent, said he found this ridicu lous. These were ideals that the government should not legislate but are taught by general practice. Respect for others was something that ââ¬Å"is a lesson of life rather than lawââ¬âessentially the same lesson taught to (or rather learned by, for it cannot be 'taught' in the usual sense) people three feet shorter and twenty years younger than the full-grown adults at the University of Michigan Law School, in institutions ranging from Boy Scout troops to public-school kindergartens.â⬠Both of these cases show that Scalia is a man of principle. He is not willing to sell his ideals down the river. He understands that even thought the constitution may be a document written many years ago, a living tree is just as likely to rot as it is to grow. Clarence Thomas was appointed by President George H.W. Bush. He has many years of service ahead of him. He is originally from a poor family in Georgia. He is only the second African-American to sit on the Supreme Court, after Thurgood Marshall. He is known for his quiet and serious demeanour on the bench. The issue of his appointment was one of the most scrutinized and divisive issues in politics in America in the 1990s. During his confirmation hearings in the Senate, a woman named Anita Hill came forward to say she has been sexually harassed by Thomas. Thomas denied this. Thomas' response to the allegations was truly memorable. Faced with a huge circus around unproven allegations, he told the Senate, ââ¬Å"This is not an opportunity to talk about difficult matters privately or in a closed
